We’re delighted to announce that Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed to build the new two storey teaching block that will accommodate 300 new students at Horsforth School in Leeds.

The project was procured through our Medium Works framework, with Morgan Sindall Construction selected as the contractor of choice by Leeds City Council following a two-stage further competition process.

Worth around £5 million, the project will also incorporate a new school entrance on the south side of the site, together with the construction of new sports facilities.

Work on site is expected to begin in early 2021.

Andy Hall, manging director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the North East and Yorkshire, commented:

“We’re very pleased to be working with Horsforth School on building this new facility. Once on site, we intend to deliver a range of programmes that will illustrate the many different elements that go into designing, constructing and managing a building such as this. We hope the insights we share will spark the students’ curiosity about the construction industry, and perhaps inform their subject choices once they are studying in their new facility.

“Additionally, we will also work with our regional supply chain on the delivery of the project and develop apprenticeship opportunities for local people. We look forward to getting started and delivering an excellent new learning facility while also helping to provide an educational and economic boost to the area.”

A project with social value at its core

The scheme is set to enable £9,965,420 in social value for the surrounding area, which equates to a return of £2.08 for every £1 spent on delivering the new build.

This is a huge social return on investment and at a time when every pound of public money spent is heavily scrutinized, it is vital that projects deliver such benefits for the local community in which they are operating in.

Jonathan Parker, National Framework Manager at Pagabo added:

“I’m delighted to see yet another great project moving forward at speed after a successful procurement through our Medium Works framework. The framework is quickly becoming a best in class route to market for the public sector on all their mid-sized projects.”

“In addition to the overall construction, it's excellent to see that Morgan Sindall Construction has pledged to support the local community during the work to build the new facilities through educational training. This really shows the company's commitment to educating the next generation and sparking an interest in the construction industry as a career for them in the future.”

A word from Leeds City Council

Councillor Jonathon Pryor, Leeds City Council’s executive board member for learning, skills and employment said:

“We want to ensure that all children in Leeds continue to have access to the best possible education, with a strong focus on meeting the increasing demand for secondary school places across the city.

“The expansion of Horsforth secondary school will move us closer to achieving our ambition of offering every child a place at one of their preferred schools, and I look forward to seeing it progress.”

We’re are so pleased to see Morgan Sindall Construction’s commitment to not only delivering a great scheme, but also leaving a lasting social value impact within the community in which the project is being delivered.

It’s great to be supporting Leeds City Council on the delivery of this project and we look forward to seeing work begin on site in early 2021.
