Works are progressing rapidly at Finham Park School in Coventry, where Speller Metcalfe is leading on a £5m expansion to improve the school’s facilities. The major expansion will see the delivery of a brand-new, 1,450 sqm performing arts teaching block set across two storeys, which has now topped out.

The new teaching facility will provide two music classrooms and three practice rooms, including a production suite, and a dance and drama studio. Along with this, five general teaching rooms will be provided, with some having added flexibility for use of examination space.

The project is now five months in on site, and the two-storey steel frame has completed construction. The next stage will see this steel structure weatherproofed before the works will begin inside the building on the ground floor.

The works have been procured through our Medium Works Framework, with the new facilities set to complete and open in time for the start of the new academic year in September 2022.

Jonathan Parker, our head of construction, said: “Our Medium Works Framework is one of our most used frameworks by clients, and we are always really pleased to see the projects procured hitting key milestones like this. This is especially pertinent with education projects like Finham Park School as we know the significant difference that the project will bring to families and the community in the area.

“A huge part of our work is providing clients with the compliant route to procure projects like this school expansion, but even more so it is about creating a positive and long-lasting legacy throughout the county. We very much look forward to seeing the school’s new facilities put to full use from the next academic year and seeing the positives this creates for the children of Coventry.”

Along with the teaching space, the new block will also include a careers hub, dining space for up to 180 pupils and state-of-the-art kitchens, a new covered roof terrace and office space. Sporting provision will also be increased, with an additional football pitch, relocated cricket square and new cricket nets.

Rob Lashford, regional director at Speller Metcalfe, said: “The new teaching block is really beginning to take shape, and we are delighted to use the topping out ceremony as an opportunity to showcase how far the build has come in a short space of time.

“As a Midlands contractor, we are delighted to be working in partnership with Coventry City Council, Finham Park School and Pagabo to deliver a project which will have an immediate positive impact on children and families in the local area.”
