West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Procures Significant Station Refurbishment Through Pagabo
A major refurbishment contract has been awarded to Henry Brothers Construction through our Refit and Refurbishment framework. The project will see Wolverhampton city centre police station undergo a significant transformation, upgrading it to better support contemporary operational demands and provide a safer, more efficient environment for officers and the public.
Upkeeping with the needs of modern policing
The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner outlined a vision for the Wolverhampton station to be refurbished and modernised, aligning with current standards for functionality, sustainability, and public accessibility. The future of the station would need to deliver an enhanced workspace that integrates energy-efficient systems, optimised space planning, and improved security features, contributing to long-term sustainability goals. As well as this, any work would also need to respect the historical legacy of the building, blending contemporary design with its traditional architecture.
Once completed, the refurbished Wolverhampton Police Station is expected to provide a state-of-the-art working environment for police officers and staff. The improvements will allow the station to operate more efficiently, reduce energy costs, and minimise environmental impact. Moreover, by enhancing public access and ensuring compliance with modern safety standards, the refurbishment aims to foster a stronger relationship between the police force and the Wolverhampton community it seeks to serve and protect.
Procuring the right partner with Pagabo
Following a competitive tendering process, Henry Brothers, a Midlands-based contractor with extensive experience in public sector projects, was appointed to lead the refurbishment. Henry Brothers’ commitment to sustainability and expertise in sensitive refurbishment projects made it an ideal choice for the transformation of Wolverhampton Police Station.
One of the significant challenges of the refurbishment has been to preserve the architectural integrity of the station while incorporating modern amenities. Henry Brothers has worked closely with heritage consultants to ensure that any alterations respect the building’s historical character. For instance, original facades and structural elements are being retained wherever possible, while retrofitting new technologies to meet the operational needs of modern-day policing.
Emma Hesbrook, head of delivery for Midlands and Wales at Pagabo, said: “Retrofit and refurbishment projects are so important for public sector buildings, such as police stations, to extend their lifecycle while also maximising the use of public funds by streamlining the use of energy and, in turn, their cost to run.
“To be a success, it’s important to appoint contractors with the specialist experience required to implement the necessary moderations, and this will be unique to each project. That’s where effective procurement processes come in, connecting public sector organisations with the expertise to deliver what they need – just like this case for West Midlands Police.”
