RG Carter Rehouses Lincolnshire County Council’s Highway Gritters

31 January 2025

RG Carter has completed a £633k project to replace the highways gritter store at Lincolnshire County Council’s North Willingham Depot in Market Rasen – completed just in time for the colder winter months.

Procured through the Medium Works Framework – which is managed on behalf of contracting authority The Education Alliance – the project has been delivered in region by the team at RG Carter’s Lincoln office.

The existing vehicle depot was no longer fit-for-purpose and in need of replacement due to heavy corrosion and the presence of asbestos roof sheets, while vehicle bays were too small for the stock of gritter lorries.

Delivered under an NEC4 Design & Build contract, the project covered the design and construction of a new portal framed building to house eight gritters and their associated snowplough attachments.

The replacement works involved removal of the existing vehicle store and safe disposal of the asbestos roof sheets. To facilitate this and support the new vehicle store, redundant electrical connections and distribution boards were disconnected and removed, with existing power and water supplies replaced or located as required.

To support a larger building footprint of the new vehicle store, the concrete ground slab was also extended, and a new soakaway installed to help manage the site. The new building is clad on three sides, retaining a fully open front elevation for easy vehicle movement.

Neal Wheatley, Director and General Manager at RG Carter Lincoln, said: “With any project, it’s important to us to deliver the agreed programme on time and budget – which we have successfully done with this scheme. But more importantly, it’s about delivering and exceeding the results the client is looking for at the outset of work.

“Through the procurement process, it was clear Lincolnshire County Council required a new facility that upgraded and enhanced quality. The end result is that high-quality finish that the client was looking for, but most importantly adds real value – helping to keep Lincolnshire’s roads clear and people moving as winter sets in.”

Elliott Talbot Medium Works Framework Manager at Pagabo, said: “This scheme is an example of the often-forgotten facilities that keeps the UK moving. When any facility is no longer fully fit-for-purpose, it impacts the operations from that site, so being able to connect clients like Lincolnshire County Council with the right organisations to deliver what they need is where our procurement consultancy excels.

“Now, not only can the facility operate more efficiently, this creates onward positive social value impacts – from people’s jobs being more efficient through to roads being able to be cleared in the winter weather allowing people in Lincolnshire to get to where they need to be more easily.”
