Thomas Sinden Awarded Newham College Teaching Block Redevelopment

28 November 2024

As part of Newham College’s ongoing estate management and curriculum improvements, the college has secured an FE Capital Transformation Fund (FECTF) grant towards the cost of redeveloping the existing A Block teaching facility at their Stratford Campus.

Thomas Sinden has been appointed through the Pagabo Medium Construction Works Framework to deliver this project. The scheme includes the demolition of the current structure and the design and construction of a new three-storey, 1,690 sqm teaching block. This new facility will feature modern teaching spaces and IT suites, alongside the external refurbishment of the car park and surrounding areas, and extensive mechanical and electrical work throughout.

The new building is designed to serve as an attractive focal point at the entrance of the college campus. The ground floor will feature London stock brick, harmonising with the existing campus architecture to provide a robust and durable finish. The first floor will utilise external insulated render panels with geometric patterns to match adjacent rendered buildings, enhancing both aesthetics and thermal performance. The top floor will feature PPC metal cassette panels, similar to the neighbouring block, ensuring a cohesive look across the campus. Large glazed curtain walling systems with integrated louvres will provide ample daylight to classrooms and passive solar heating. This design maintains a consistent material palette with the surrounding buildings while prioritising high thermal performance and quality construction.

The project aims to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating by meeting the GLA requirements for net zero carbon through sustainable M&E strategies and enhanced building fabric thermal performance.

Steve McMahon, Operations Director at Thomas Sinden, said: “We are excited to contribute to Newham College’s enhanced facilities and look forward to delivering modern teaching spaces and IT suites that will foster a welcoming, inspiring atmosphere for both students and staff. We look forward to working closely with the project team – Drees & Sommer, 10A Architects, Ingleton Wood, and Waterman Building Services, to bring this important facility to life. We believe this redevelopment will significantly improve the learning experience, foster innovation, and support the college’s commitment to sustainability and excellence.”

Tom Retallick, Framework Manager at Pagabo said: “With key elements such as innovation and sustainability embedded throughout, this redevelopment project is the perfect example of the future of construction within the public sector. It’s exactly the type of project we’re proud to facilitate via our frameworks, with Thomas Sinden showing an ongoing commitment to these key factors, which will greatly benefit a new generation of students while also working towards all-important sustainability goals.”

Judith Abbott, Chief Financial and Operating Officer at Newham College said “delighted to be working with Thomas Sinden on this project, which is a key element of our estates and net zero carbon strategies.  It will transform the Stratford campus by replacing an obsolete and ugly building with an attractive and sustainable facility that will enhance the teaching and learning experience for students and staff alike, for generations to come.”
