Halcyon Birthing Centre project reaches completion through our DPS for Small Works
Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust appointed BSN Group Construction to complete a £470,000 minor works project through a further competition process via our Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS) for Small Works. We are delighted to say that the project has recently reached a successful completion.
Project Overview
The Halcyon Centre, initially intended as an off-site water birthing facility, had been left vacant. The project aimed to repurpose the space by completely stripping it out and remodelling it to accommodate a new maternity consultant/exam room, a training base, and a reception area for the maternity team. A full MEP replacement was necessary to meet the requirements of end-users, entailing the installation of new AC units, ventilation, electrical systems, fire alarms, IT infrastructure, and training facility equipment.
Challenges Faced and Solutions
The project initially encountered delays due to funding issues, but once funds were released, immediate action was required. Leveraging their experience as a repeat client, BSN Group Construction accelerated the mobilisation period, commencing just a few weeks later. Despite the fast-paced nature of the project, it was completed within a remarkable 10-week timeframe, achieving an excellent high-quality finish with minimal post-completion issues. This enabled almost immediate occupation and use of the facilities.
Leon Pontin, DPS Manager at Pagabo, said: “The Halcyon Centre project was procured via the Pagabo Small Works DPS on behalf of Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. BSN Group Construction have worked to the highest of standards and the finished building looks amazing. Their understanding and flexibility on delays out of their control shows their professionalism and dedication to deliver for the NHS Trust. Pagabo hope that the new upgraded facility is well received within the local area and we look forward to working with the Trust and BSN Group Construction in the future.”
Imelda O’Sullivan, Capital Projects Manager at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trustm, said: “Another great project by Darren Perry and the BSN Group Construction team, thanks for their efforts on this one.”
BSN Group Construction Director, Darren Perry, stated: “This project highlights the benefit of our relationship with Pagabo and our client. The original appointment was on the back of similar schemes with SWB NHS Trust; then following the delay, our open book approach to agree inflationary uplift, led to an immediate start and meeting their deadlines.”
