Work has completed on site for the first project procured through our Demolition and Land Remediation Framework by demolition specialist Cawarden.
The 7.91-acre site, based in Turnpike Close in Grantham, was formerly home to a processing factory and distribution centre operated by Fenland Foods since 1986. The site has been vacant since 2018 when Fenland Foods was disbanded by its parent company, with the buildings and process plant demolished to slab level in 2021.
Tasked with preparing the derelict site for South Kesteven District Council to develop into new facilities, Cawarden was appointed via direct award and able to start work on site within three months of the initial expression of interest. The scope of work covered removal of the remaining ground structures, capping off services, removing any contamination and regrading the site to new levels.
Our Framework Manager, David Llewellyn, said: “It’s fantastic to see the first project through our Demolition and Land Remediation framework now complete. The framework was established for this very purpose – facilitating the rejuvenation of brownfield sites throughout the UK to bring them back into practical use, sustainably.
“With a site like this that has been vacant for half a decade, approaching the procurement with a quick and smooth attitude made sure that work could be underway with the best supplier for the job as quickly as possible. Thanks to a compliant direct award approach, this was made a reality and with work now complete, the council can push forward with its further development plans without delay.”
Oliver Crooks, Commercial Director at Cawarden, said: “It’s testament to the efforts of all involved in the procurement of these works how quickly we were on site following initial expression of interest. This process allowed us to demonstrate to the client how we were able to deliver on the scope, and we’re proud to be facilitating the re-use of land through our services.
“During works at this particular site, a stockpile of 6F2 aggregate has been built, making sure nothing goes to waste. This type of aggregate is a by-product of the demolition process and can be re-used in further development as a well-draining sub-base for new development elements, making sure that nothing goes to waste for the council.”
A spokesperson for South Kesteven District Council, said: “This marks an important milestone in the redevelopment of the former Fenland Foods site. The appointment of Cawarden came through the framework, with expert advice from Pagabo ensuring a smooth process.
“The Council is exploring options for the site and, with clearance complete, its full potential is there for all to see.”
Mark Genney, Project Manager at Gleeds, which provided South Kesteven District Council with project management services, said:
“We’re pleased that this land preparation work was able to be awarded to the right specialists and be completed in the agreed period.. The procurement process was notably smooth from initial contact to transitioning onto site; the site is now clear and ready to be developed to meet the council’s needs.”
