Berkhamsted Leisure Centre

KKP undertook the initial work and built facilities study for Dacorum Council and from that the feasibility project emerged.

The brief was to replace the ageing and loss-making centre with a new fit for purpose efficient centre and hub offering an increased range of activities reaching a wider demographic, lower running costs and the ability to rationalise the 3G playing pitch and play area on the site.

Two options were developed for the council ranging from a basic “essential scheme” to a larger “desirable scheme” with the business plan by KKP and the building costs by AR amended to reflect both options. A luxury day spa facility was also investigated in some depth.

The scheme was taken to RIBA 1/2 with initial high level discussion with the planners concentrating on massing, access and phasing issues.

The outcomes and benefits of the scheme were to Increase physical activity and tackling inactivity in the catchment area. Improve the health and wellbeing as well as maximising performance of users from the local community, promoting healthy lifestyle and behaviours. Reducing inactivity and increasing participation in sport and leisure whilst ensuring a sustainable future for strategically important community sport facilities that are financially viable. Early-stage M&E strategy was developed by Desco to indicate the advantages of a BREEAM excellent design in reducing running costs and the positive impact on Dacorum’s Zero Carbon ambitions.
