Morgan Sindall Delivering Oak Wards Facility At Milton Keynes University Hospital

04 April 2025

Construction work is underway at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) for its new ‘Oak Wards’ facility, with Morgan Sindall Construction having been appointed the £18.2m job.

Procured by MKUH through the Major Works Framework – which we manage on behalf of contracting authority Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust – the project aims to enhance bed capacity and meet the growing needs of the community in the area.

Specialist procurement for healthcare schemes

Situated to the east of the hospital, the ‘Oak Wards’ facility will deliver two 24-bed wards spanning two floors. The expansion work is designed to support the hospital’s ongoing commitment to high-standard care and continuing to deliver an acute healthcare service into the future.

Our framework manager Elliott Talbot said: “Our position as one of only a handful of nationally accredited NHS framework hosts, giving NHS clients the trust and peace of mind that we have the experience and expertise to guide them through the most effective procurement process for their schemes.

Healthcare fit for the future

The Oak Wards facility scheme follows several high-profile improvement projects at MKUH, including a new radiotherapy centre and new imaging centre, along with additional multi-storey car park.

Joe Harrison CBE, chief executive officer at MKUH, said: “We are delighted to have begun work on this essential expansion of our hospital. The Oak Wards are a key part of our broader strategy to enhance our facilities and address the acute healthcare needs of our growing community. This milestone reflects our firm commitment to providing a hospital that is well-equipped for the future.”

Emma Curtis, Northern Home Counties area director at Morgan Sindall, said: “It’s exciting to see work begin at Milton Keynes University Hospital’s new Oak Wards facility, as once complete this high-end and sustainable new ward will play a vital role in increasing the site’s capacity. Our close and collaborative relationship with MKUH has been central to the project and we’re looking forward to building on this as the construction activity continues.”

The construction of Oak Wards is expected to complete in early 2026.
