Sunderland City Council is reimagining the urban experience with a landmark car park development delivered by Sir Robert McAlpine.

This project is part of the wider Riverside Sunderland Regeneration and was procured via the Major Works Framework, managed by Pagabo on behalf of Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust.

Valued at £14.68 million, the project forms a key piece of a growing development landscape that includes a new City Hall, Eye Hospital, office space, and residential schemes.

A best-in-class parking solution

The new multi-storey car park on Farringdon Row; named “Best New Car Park” by the British Parking Awards, is helping to raise the standard for urban infrastructure. With over 650 spaces, it offers a safer, more modern and accessible environment for residents, workers, and visitors alike.

Appointed via a single-stage further competition through the Major Works Framework, Sir Robert McAlpine brought forward a high-quality, efficient delivery that responds to the council’s wider regeneration ambitions.

Pagabo supported market engagement and managed the procurement via the client’s own portal, providing guidance on documentation and evaluation processes to ensure a compliant, streamlined experience.

Sustainability and city-scale regeneration

This car park has been designed with long-term value in mind. It features energy-efficient lighting systems, enhanced pedestrian access, EV charging infrastructure, and two living walls made up of over 50,000 plants. These sustainable elements contribute to reduced operational emissions and improve the visual impact of essential infrastructure. Its strategic location supports easy access to key civic, business, and leisure destinations across the city. The project adds capacity while also offering a forward-looking example of how infrastructure in Sunderland can continue to evolve—prioritising cleanliness, modern design, and community needs.

A strategic step forward

Marking a new chapter in Sunderland’s growth journey, the development has already proven its value by improving city centre connectivity and complementing neighboring projects in healthcare, housing, and local government.
