Graham has been selected by Peel L&P as the contractor to build a catalytic and sustainable development of 500 apartments within the emerging Northbank neighbourhood at Wirral Waters on the River Mersey. The appointment has been made as a direct award through our Pagabo for Business Major Works Framework, with construction work set to begin in spring 2022.
The £130m development – known as Wirral Waters One – is set to be the biggest single development at Wirral Waters to date and will comprise 500 one- and two-bedroom waterfront apartments. The development will include 100 affordable homes, with the rent of these units being set at a maximum of 80 per cent of open market value.
Jonathan Parker, our head of construction, said: “We’re really pleased to see such a significant scheme procured through our Major Works Pagabo for Business framework.
“Our Pagabo for Business frameworks are built with the private sector in mind, while keeping all the compliance, flexibility and simplicity of process that we are known for within the public sector. This allows us to connect our expert suppliers with private sector clients to select the best company for any large-scale construction project.
“Wirral Waters One is set to be a truly transformative scheme for the area, so we look forward to seeing work progress throughout the next two and a half years and the positive social and environmental impact this will have for the local community.”
Peter Reavey, regional director for Graham’s building division, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed as the contractor to develop these new homes for Peel L&P at Wirral Waters. At Graham, our focus is on ‘delivering lasting impact’, and this scheme, which includes 500 apartments, of which 100 are affordable new homes, will allow us to continue this proud tradition of constructing homes in the heart of the local communities where we operate.
“We have established a strong presence in the Merseyside region, and I look forward to continuing to work with the experienced local supply chain, as well as providing further opportunities for local students and young people to develop meaningful careers in the construction industry.”
The project design has sustainability at its core, utilising a range of energy efficient and low carbon technologies. The new homes will also be ‘resource efficient’ by reducing water and energy consumption, prioritising natural lighting, reducing wastage and using sustainable, efficient heating systems.
Green space will be prioritised, with landscaping and tree planting surrounding the development, along with parks, dockside walkways and cycle routes already transforming the waterfront area. Residents will also have access to cycle storage and electric charging points to encourage more sustainable modes of transport.
The development is set to be a catalyst for a number of waterside residential schemes due to be built in the area, including several that are already underway.
Richard Mawdsley, director of development for Wirral Waters at Peel L&P, said: “Our appointment of Graham is a major step forward to seeing more cranes and delivery activity at Wirral Waters, Graham is a leading construction business with excellent social value credentials.
“Working together, Peel L&P and Graham will also ensure that we bring more fantastic opportunities for the construction students at Wirral Met College throughout the 2.5 year build period of this game changing project.”
